Living Perfect Health

Every day we are assailed by viruses, bacteria, and the toxins swirling in the quantum molecular soup that surrounds us. Since we are able to ward off illness most of the time, why is it that sometimes our defenses can’t keep up?

The answer lies in the health and balance of our immune system, the body’s primary defense against infectious disease. In every moment, our immune system is responding to dynamic changes in the body’s inner and outer environment.

When energy is flowing freely between our environment, senses, body, mind, emotions, and soul, our immune system is awake and responsive. However, when we have congestion in some aspect of our life – a stressful job, a turbulent relationship, poor diet, disrupted sleep – the flow of energy becomes blocked and our immunity suffers.

In Ayurvedic medicine, symptoms and sickness are the body’s signal that we need to restore balance, eliminate whatever is causing the blockages, and reestablish the healthy flow of energy and information. At first the symptoms may be as subtle as a slight uneasiness or discomfort, but if we ignore them, the body may try to get our attention by speaking more loudly. For example, if we have been feeling tired but push through our fatigue, perhaps with the help of caffeine or other stimulants, we block our body’s innate healing abilities.

Ayurveda teaches us to pay attention to the subtle signs of imbalance: a digestive problem that comes and goes, a slight muscle ache that persists, a lack of restful sleep. The goal is to listen carefully to what our bodies are trying to tell us and take appropriate action to restore balance.

Some of the most powerful tools for mind-body balance and healing are also the most ancient ones. These include meditation, yoga, Panchakarma cleansing, herbal remedies, and other Ayurvedic practices. At the Chopra Center, Deepak and David developed the weekly Perfect Health program to offer a nurturing, safe environment where guests learn how to use these tools in their daily lives. Each day, they receive luxurious Ayurvedic massage treatments and learn how to tune into the natural healing wisdom of their mind, body, and soul. Click here to learn more.
