Modern science tells us we live in a universe with no edges in space, with no beginning or ending in time. Eastern wisdom says we have a universe within ourselves as profound, as infinite, and as timeless as the universe outside. Unbounded freedom permeates everything and yet we continue to live our lives as prisoners of fragmented values, prey to disease, victims of unhappiness, caught in the web of time.
Healing is ultimately a journey of self-discovery. A journey through our own inner territory, which we both discover and create at the same time. A journey whose goal is the end of an illusion, where we step out of space and time into unbounded freedom.
Like any other journey, the journey to perfect health can be made easier when we have a good map. As healthcare practitioners, we help create maps for our patients. As individuals, we learn to use these maps to guide us towards peace, harmony, and wholeness. For the journey to be successful, however, the traveler must participate and the guide must be competent. The patient must be prepared to take responsibility for his or her situation and the healthcare provider must be able to draw from the best possible range of knowledge. We cannot just rely on the science of the West or the wisdom of the East; we need to learn how to integrate the two.
Over the years many people have come to the Chopra Center seeking help with physical, mental or emotional challenges, or the all-too-common effects of sheer burnout. In some we have seen miraculous cures, while in others the disease has run its course. In almost every case, we have seen an improvement in the quality of life. And, when the quality increases, it's amazing how the quantity also increases. Working with so many people with differing situations has given me, David Simon, and the Chopra Center medical staff a wonderful opportunity to explore integrative medicine very deeply. We have been able to see how a combination of the best that holistic and allopathic medicine has to offer can benefit almost every situation.
More than a decade ago we created the Journey into Healing workshop to share our explorations and findings with likeminded healthcare givers and anyone interested in their own health. As advances continue in Western medicine and our own knowledge and understanding grows, so this immersion in mind-body medicine continues to evolve. This 4-day workshop offers the latest cutting-edge information and practical advice for incorporating this knowledge into any practice or lifestyle. If you've ever asked, “What more can I do for my patients?" or “What more can I do for myself?” this workshop is for you.
Journey into Healing will take place at the Chopra Center this September 10–14. We’re pleased to announce that the guest faculty at this special event will include two renowned healing experts: my dear friend, best-selling author, and acclaimed motivational speaker Dr. Wayne Dyer and Daniel Vicario, M.D., director of the Integrative Medicine Program at the San Diego Cancer Center.
I warmly invite you to join us for this fascinating journey into the very essence of healing.
